Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020004 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: B Impact: Report: No mention of this mine is in Loen and Pearson (1989) or in any other publication researched. It was located by the shaft symbol on the Dewey quadrangle. The property consists of two "shafts" and two "prospects"; the difference being that two of the workings appear to have had timbers at one time. All workings are presently 10-15 feet deep; the shafts may have been deeper at one time but probably not over 100 feet deep. They are located in a white marble which has been intensely stained by iron oxides which are maroon, orange and dark brown in color. Ruppel and others (1993) mapped this as Madison Limestone with a Late Cretaceous granodiorite intrusive to the east. The geology appears similar to the Churchill mine which is in sec. 5, and was described in Geach, 1972, p. 148. Minerals present are chalcedony, earthy FeOx, and coarse grained calcite. The workings trend approximately N. 15 degrees W. There is no water component and no real hazards. The is some old, rusting junk present. |
