Report: Poorly sorted gravel lenses, occurring on benches near the mouth of Soap Gulch. This drainage area has a history of placer handwork, with no apparent signs of mechanized development. Rocks rarely exceed 6 inches in diameter and commonly are less than 4 inches. Gravel has an average thickness of 10 ft, with 1-2 ft of soil covering. The gravel texture infers a flood deposit--- the matrix contains large amounts of sand and silt, with limited sorting. Dark brown, flat and smooth gold pieces range up to 1/2 by 1/2 by1/10 in.; some pieces have ragged edges. The gold dos not exhibit long distance transportation characteristics, such as hammering and folding.
