Report: Highlands Mill The Highlands Mill, a cyanidation facility, was originally built below the 600 foot adit at the Butte Highlands Mine in the early 1930's, but it was moved to avoid polluting the Butte water supply (Basin Creek). It was rebuilt above Moosetown in 1937, and operated until the Highlands Mine closed in 1942. Approximately 59,000 tons of tailings are present in 4 impoundments. All four contain low metal values except for gold, which averages .032 oz/ton. The ore was mostly oxidized, and tailings consist of quartz, iron stained clays, and mica. Seeps and springs emerge from all four tailings piles, and Moose Creek itself cuts the lower tailings pile.
