Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: BUTTE Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020004 Forest or Resource Area: DEERLODGE Owner: N Impact: Report: Gold Hill (Highlands District) The Gold Hill property contains diorite of the Boulder Batholith under a roof pendant of Helena Formation cut by aplite (Sahinen, 1950). All rocks have been altered and sheared, and are cut by veinlets of iron-stained quartz. Mineralization is roughly aligned in a N50W 15-45SW orientation. Sahinen's sample of highly altered aplite was of low grade (.03 oz/ton gold, .10 oz/ton silver), but the area has been of interest to explorationists searching for low-grade bulk-tonnage deposits. In 1909, a cyanide mill was built on the property and treated ore from the surrounding mines as well (Sahinen, 1950). It operated from at least 1910 until 1912. Tailings were settled just downstream along a tributary of Moose Creek. Today small pockets of tailings are scattered for over 1/2 mile along the stream; most are heavily vegetated. There are less than 200 tons of tailings on Deerlodge National Forest lands (see map). There is also a discharge from a short caved adit in unaltered diorite. The discharge has been developed as a spring. |
