Report: Opsata Mine PO004850 The Opsata is located in the SEĽ sec 25, T.11N., R.8W. immediately to the east of Ophir Creek on BLM land. The ste is easily accessible from the Ophir Creek road, with high visibility. Ground water was reportedly present by Pardee and Schrader (1933) but none was evident in the field visit. There is a standing hoist house/headframe over one shaft. A sign indicates that the shaft may still be open beneath some loose boards. The building is partially collapsed, there is an old warning sign, but is tempting to explorers. Two adits trend N80oE to the east of the shaft. There are two open portals, each with <20' remaining open, but with some slight hazard associated with them. The waste dump is adjacent to a flowing ditch coming from Ophir Creek, but no adverse effects are evident. "The mine of Nels Opsata, of Ovando MT, at Ophir, on the east side of Ophir Creek, is said to have produced $600 worth of gold-silver ore that ran $60 to the ton. The vein dips to the northwest and is opened to a depth of 90 feet. The footwall is of quartzite and the hanging wall - quartz monzonite. Work was suspended because of water." Loen, 1990 described this shaft as being on a vein in Bonner quartzite, while Pardee and Schrader (1933) described it also as dipping NW and associated with a fault with quartzite in the footwall; quartz monzonite in the hanging wall. A grab sample (POOP-1) from the waste dump ran 0.002 opt Au, 0.21 opt Ag, <1 ppm Cu, 0.004% Pb and 0.001% Zn.
