Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: U Report: Boston (PO004810) The Boston workings consist of several small to moderately sized dumps. Evidence of underground mining (other than the dumps) has been obscurred by time and revegetation. The mine purportedly had several open pits and a shaft (Pardee, 1918). This site is situated on a dry N-S trending ridge; surface disturbance is less than 1 acre. The mine is located on a crescent-shaped body about 3000' feet long and no more than 500' wide (Pardee, 1918). Host rock is a brown garnet-epidote-magnetite rock formed by contact metamorphism. Ore minerals include chrysocolla (altered to malachite in part) and gold (occurring primarily in flinty quartz veinlets). Sparse chrysocolla and malachite were noted on the dump rock; these minerals formed crusts or fracture fillings on the dark brown garnet rock. There was also limonite stained quartz present on the dumps. An AIM sample assayed 6 ppm lead, 102 ppm zinc, 10,000+ ppm copper, 10.6 ppm silver, 0.0150 ounces of gold, and less than 2 ppm arsenic. The Boston was active in the last half of the 19th century; the mine was inactive in 1916 (Pardee, 1918). Production figures could not be found for this mine; dump size indicates a moderate amount of ore was produced. This patented claim poses no enivornmental hazards. |
