Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10040103 Forest or Resource Area: MISSOULA Owner: M Impact: Report: Bilk and Weasel Gulches (PO004790) Placer workings are found in Bilk and Weasel Gulches almost to the top of the drainage divide. Workings consist of trenches, pits, and waste rock piles. Host rock is Quaternary gravels (with cobbles) composed principally of granodiorite, marble, and brown garnet rock. These placer deposits have been worked since the 1860's. A pumping plant was in operation at one time and provided water (from Weasel Creek) for placer mining operations in Bilk Gulch. Details on production from this area were not found. Most of the workings lie on patented claims. Both of these gulches were dry when visited in 1994. It does not appear that placer mining has adversely affected water or other resources in this area. |
