Box 36800 Billings, MT 59107 Dear Sir: As requested by Mr. Steve Van Matre, I have summarized the analytical results of samples collected at the Cominco mine site. Surface-water samples were collected at four sites in the vicinity of the Cominco Warm Springs Mine (T10NR9W Section 19 and T10NR10W Section 25) on June 24, 1993 by Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology personnel for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Complete water-chemistry data for each of these sites is provided as an attachment to this document. The sample locations are described as follows: CPS-010: Warm Springs Creek upstream of mine CPS-020: influent stream to lagoon below mine CPS-030: lagoon effluent (to pipe) CPS-040: Warm Springs Creek below mine (below falls) A comparison of selected analytes to water-quality standards is presented in Table 1. The sample collected upstream of the mine indicated an exceedence of sulfate and represented the highest concentration compared to the other three samples. This high concentration is likely due to the geothermal origin of the creek or dissolution of gypsum. In fact, the only sample that did not exceed standards is that of the mine effluent to the lagoon (CPS-020). The mine influent sample (CPS-020) exceeded standards for aluminum and fluoride. Both constituents are below standards at the effluent end of the lagoon (CPS-030); however, sulfate exceeds standards. These concentration changes are likely to be reflective of the influence of ground water on the water quality of the lagoon. The downstream sample (CPS-040) indicates an exceedence of the secondary standard for sulfate and, like the upstream samples, is reflective of the geothermal origin of the creek or dissolution of gypsum. The primary constituent of concern, mercury, is below detection limits (0.03 ug/L) for all samples. A fifth sample was collected at the Lower Luke Mine (T10NR9W Section 15) on the same date; the analytical results are included in the attachment. The low discharge and limited extent of the adit discharge necessitated only a single sample. None of the constituents for which standards were reviewed were exceeded in this sample.
