Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010203 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: B Impact: Report: Olympiad (Comet) (MI005683) The Olympiad workings, including the Comet claim, are located a short distance north of Coloma at the head of Bivens Gulch. Workings consist of large dumps, prospect pits, and trenches, and caved underground workings. A partially caved adit is found directly above Bivens Gulch next to a cabin. Total surface disturbance is approximately 5 acres. Host rock, deposit type, and vein mineralogy are similar to other deposits in the area (i.e. granodiorite with enriched quartz veins). The only apparent sign of mineralization at this site is limonite staining on dump rock. The oxidized ore near the surface purportedly had good gold values; there were small shoots of sulfide ore below. Sulfide minerals from the shoots included tetrahedrite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite (Pardee, 1918). Specimens from the lower workings showed considerable muscovite mica and coarse quartz suggesting a pegmatite (Pardee, 1918). Some of the oxidized ore from this site was purported to run as high as $100.00 per ton gold. Only a few details regarding mine history and production are available. A 15-ton Huntington mill was installed at the site in 1905 but only a small production of gold was purportedly made (Pardee, 1918). Mining operations have probably continued on a sporadic basis up to the present-day. Accurate production figures were not found in the literature. This site is located on BLM land; all workings observed were dry and posed no apparent environmental threat. |
