Report: Unnamed Barite (MI005667) An unnamed barite deposit is found on the west side of Washoe Gulch west-northwest of the acive Coloma Barite Mine. Workings consist of a moderately sized open pit with multiple dumps. Host rock appears to be a medium to dark gray quartzite which is micaceous in part (Precambrian Garnet Range Formation?). The white, creme-colored, and yellowish barite occurs in a vein several feet thick. Some of the barite exhibits limonite staining and has manganese dendrites. An igneous dike is exposed near the vein (in the middle portion of the quarry); the rock appears to be a trachyte porphory. A fairly large freshwater pond in found in the lowest part of the quarry (open-pit). Water quality in the pond appears to be good based on the number and kind of aquatic insects found there; elk and deer also appear to be using this pond as a water source. The site was forward to the hydrologists for investigation.
