Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010201 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: M Impact: L Report: Blacktail (Linton) (MI005595) The Blacktail (Linton) mine workings are found on the east fork of Cramer Creek several miles northeast of Interstate 90. Workings consist of a large open cut, a caved adit, the remains of a 500 ton mill, and several waste rock dumps. Total surface disturbance is approximately 7 acres. Host rock is light to medium-gray dolomite (Cambrian Hasmark Formation?); signs of mineralization include abundant iron oxides in part. High grade ore composed of galena with cerrusite and malachite was reported from this replacement deposit. The ore purportedly carried 1 ounce of silver for 1% lead, with a trace of gold (Sahinen, 1957). This relatively large site has waste rock dumps (mixed with mill tailings) in contact with the east fork of Cramer Creek. Waste rock and tailings also appear to have traveled a considerable distance down the drainage onto private land. Water quality does not appear to have been degraded. The site is bisected by the east Cramer Creek road and there is good evidence suggesting that part of the operations here were to procure road metal. This mine was opened in 1947 with the mill constructed in 1949; the mine operated from 1947 to 1953 when operations ceased (Sahinen, 1957). Production data for this mine is incomplete but judging from the size of the waste rock dumps, was substantial. A map of this site was prepared for the AIM program and can be found in the MBMG files. |
