Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010203 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: L Report: Charcoal (Shawbut) (MI005579) The Charcoal, or Shawbut, workings consist of an open adit, the ruins of a mill, and a linear mill tailings dump. Total surface disturbance is approximately 1 ½ acres. Host rock is granodiorite; one segment of the dump rock appears to be coarsely crystalline and may represent a sill or dike (encountered in underground workings). There is minor iron oxide staining of the wall rock above the adit and on the (relatively coarse) mill tailings. This site is a patented claim and is located on the east fork of Ashby Creek. The adit has a small freshwater discharge (abundant and varied vegetation is in and adjacent to the flow path). The mill tailings dump is in contact with the creek over a 200 feet distance. There is wooden debris over most of the site (from the collapsed mill building). The possibility exists that this site may impact federal land downgradient. |
