Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010201 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: Report: Hidden Treasure (MI005547) The Hidden Treasure Mine, located near Wallace Creek Reservoir, consists of an open (gated) adit, an ore chute, the ruins of a mine building, and a large mine dump. Total surface disturbance is approximately 3 acres. Host rock is Precambrian garnet range formation; lithology is light to medium colored quartzite. Evidence of mineralization includes iron oxide staining present over most of the site. The literature indicates the prospect was developed by two adits; only one was observed in 1994. Geologic maps of adit levels and a vertical-longitudinal section map can be found in Hintzman (1964); a plan and section-underground workings map can be found in Piquette (1940). The open adit has a modest fresh-water discharge; the water seeps underground after a short distance and re-emerges below, crossing the road. The discharge contributes to Wallace Creek Dam a short distance away. This is a patented claim; the discharge potentially affects a small tract of federal land downstream. |
