Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010203 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: U Report: Mammoth (MI005475) The Mammoth workings consist of at least 2 caved shafts, several prospect pits, and a substantial dump area. Total surface disturbance is approximately 2 acres. Host rock is granodiorite. There is also minor white to pinkish marble (or limestone) on the dumps reflecting the proximity to the limestone-granodiorite contact. This was a vein deposit with white quartz forming the gangue; the only apparent sign of mineralization in 1994 was limonite staining. In the upper levels, the ore in both principle veins was oxidized and reportedly rich; the sulfide ore contained pyrite and tetrahedrite (Sahinen, 1957). An AIM sample assayed 534 ppm lead, 136 ppm zinc, 259 ppm copper, 44 ppm silver, 0.919 ounces gold, and 36 ppm arsenic. This mine was developed in the late 1800's with mining continuing well into the 1900's (Sahinen, 1957). Small yearly outputs were recorded up to 1950; the underground workings were caved by 1957 (Sahinen, 1957). Total production was approximately $200,000.00 worth of gold-silver ore. More efficient milling practices could have increased this value (Sahinen, 1957). All workings at this site are dry and pose no threats to surface water. |
