Report: The Bismarck Mine Tailings are adjacent to but not within the west fork of the South Boulder River in the Tobacco Root Mountains. Mining consisted of exploiting base-metals in a polymetalic porphyry (?). The mine is located on private ground above the wetlands where tailings have been partially contained by a breached dam. Tailings and soils have mixed through out the area onto USFS land. Although no discharge to the west fork of the South Boulder river was evident, it is likely that some amount of the tailings may wash into the river during runoff. It is also likely that contaminated groundwater is discharging to the river. JBIS10L: South Fork Boulder river, downstream of where tailings wash into river. Total and dissovled Metals; Flow meter. JBID10H: Located in the tailings area above the old dam. The sample will be analyzed for Total Metals only. The sampling will be composited on 10 foot centers between the stakes. JBID20H: Located below the tailings area where soils may wash into the river. The sample will be analyzed for Total Metals only. The sample is a grab sample at the stake.
