Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: P Impact: U Report: Argenta (MA006884) The Argenta workings are located at the head of Wet Georgia Gulch on a dry south-facing hillside. Workings consist of multiple caved adits and accompanying dumps; total surface disturbance is approximately 2 acres. Auriferous pyrite and galena was present in a quartz vein paralleling the footwall of an acidic dike; the dike cross-cuts Precambrian Pony Gneiss (Johns, 1961). Minerals identified on the dumps in 1994 included hematite, limonite, malachite, cuprite(?), and tarnished pyrite. An AIM sample assayed greater than 10,000 ppm lead, 5830 ppm zinc, 5870 ppm copper, 72.8 ppm silver, 0.473 ounces of gold, and 726 ppm arsenic. The argentiferous lead ores of the Argenta were located in the 1870's (Johns, 1961). Ore was produced at least up through 1937; in 1937, 9.6 tons were mined (MBMG Files). Production data for other years was not found. This site is located on USFS land. |
