Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: Ella (MA006863) The Ella workings consist of several open and caved adits with accompanying small dumps. Total surface disturbance is 1 acre or less. Host rock is Precambrian Pony Gneiss; an andesite dike approximately 100' wide (striking northeast and dipping about 30NW) is associated with the ore deposit (Winchell, 1914). Workings explore a thin quartz vein which strikes N40E and dips approximately 35N (Johns, 1961). Ore minerals included galena, pyrite, cerrusite, and iron-stained quartz (Johns, 1961). A sample from the vein assayed 3% lead, 4.5 ounces silver, and 1 ounce gold (Johns, 1961). The mine was intermittently operated from 1909 through at least 1937. Eighteen tons was produced in 1937 (yielding 290 pounds of lead, 7 ounces of silver, and 195 ounces of gold). This dry property consists of patented and unpatented claims on or adjacent to USFS land. |
