Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: Corncracker (MA6842) The Corncracker Mine consists of 2 adits (1 open; 1 partially caved) and 2 moderately sized dumps. Total surface disturbance is approximately 2.5 acres. Host rock is Precambrian Pony Gneiss; gangue mineralogy appears to be light-gray quartz. Johns reported auriferous pyrite as the principle ore with mineralized bands striking N25E and dipping 70E (Johns, 1961). There was moderate limonite staining on the dump rock in 1994; additional minerals observed included pyrite, chalcopyrite, hematite, and sphalerite(?). Officially reported production for the years 1921-1935 was 2419 ounces of gold, 1899 ounces of silver, and a trace of copper from 1133 tons of ore (Lorain, 1937). Approximately 450 tons of ore was shipped between 1944 and 1950 (Johns, 1961). This dry site is located on BLM land. |
