Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020005 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: P Impact: U Report: Carolina (MA6836) The Carolina workings are fairly extensive and cover 100 plus acres above Goodrich Gulch. All of the workings observed in 1994 consisted of adits (caved and open) with accompanying dumps. Johns indicated 18 adits in the general area in his 1961 publication. Host rock is Cambrian Woolsey Shale (Johns, 1961); Flathead quartzite was also noted on some dumps. These vein deposits strike generally north or northeast and have variable dips (Johns, 1961). The northeast striking Carolina Fault displaces one of these veins (Johns, 1961). Ore minerals included auriferous pyrite, native gold, and iron oxides in a quartz gangue. A selected dump sample assayed trace lead, 0.50% zinc, trace copper, 1 ounce silver, and 3.2 ounces gold (Johns, 1961). Production from 1939 to 1940 was $25,000.00 (Johns, 1961). The MBMG files indicate the mine produced ore earlier as well, from 1909-1913 and in 1934. Cumulative production history and operational history is lacking for this mine. All workings observed in 1994 were on USFS land and were without a water component. |
