Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020005 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: P Impact: U Report: Crystal Lake-Elenora (MA006890/MA006833) The Crystal Lake Property, including the Elenora Claim, is located south of and above Goodrich Gulch. The workings are extensive and cover an area in excess of 100 acres. Most of the workings consist of adits (caved and open) with accompanying dumps. In addition, there are cabin ruins and a considerable amount of junk (scrap metal, etc.). The ruins of the mill used to process ore from this property can be found on the south side of Goodrich Gulch; this mill was operational for only 1 month. Host rock is Precambrian Gneiss, Cambrian Flathead Quartzite, and Cambrian Woolsey Shale (Johns, 1961). It appears that quartz veins host the ore minerals. Dumps exhibit limonite staining; malachite, cuprite(?), and hematite were also noted. This property has been largely inactive since the 1920's with the exception of sporadic lease activity (Johns, 1961). Forty-seven tons of ore were mined in 1938 (MBMG files). No additional production or historical data was found in the literature. The workings in this area are on patented claims; all sites observed were dry. |
