Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: SHERIDAN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: U Report: Democrat (MA003305) An active mining operation, located several hundred yards below the High Ridge Mine, is believed to be the Democrat. Workings in 1994 consisted of an adit and a relatively large dump area. A mine shack, equipment, timbers, and structures were also present at this location in 1994. Winchell indicated that this mine was developed by 200' and 400' tunnels in his 1914 publication (Winchell, 1914). Surface disturbance at the site is approximately 2 acres. Host rock is Precambrian gneiss; gangue mineralogy appears to be light-colored quartz occurring in veins. Minor limonite staining and sparse pyrite are the principle evidence of mineralization. This mine purportedly produced oxidized gold ore (Winchell, 1914). An AIM sample assayed 172 ppm lead, 110 ppm zinc, 29 ppm copper, 1.4 ppm silver, 0.0020 ounces gold, and 202 ppm arsenic. Coarsely crystalline potassium feldspar crystals were also noted on the dump; this may be an indication that the workings encountered a pegmatite dike. No information regarding production or operational history for this mine was found in the literature. A small, clear, freshwater adit flow is present at this location (piped away from the adit entrance in 1994). A site (plan) map of this USFS site was prepared for the AIM program. When the site was visited in 1996, there was no discharge and the adit had been sealed with planks and a gate. Small fuel spills were evident on the ground near a truck and some 55-gallon drum of diesel(?). |
