Report: Quote from Johns (1959) MBMG Bulletin 12 ..... "The Snipetown placer is on a bend of the Yaak River below Yaak Falls in the center of sec. 19, T. 33 N., R. 33 W. It was operated during 1934 and 1935. The placer ground was leased from E. Johnson who homesteaded in the area. The operators were R. Moore, J. Lewis, M. D. Powely, amd Mr. Packingham of the U.S. Immigration and Custom Services. The gold-bearing gravel was found on benches above the present river level. The gold value ranged from $0.90 to $3.00 a cubic yard in a pay streak found in clay above bedrock. Some fine flake gold and nuggets about matchhead size were recovered from the sluicing operation. A flume was constructed to bring water from upriver. Sections of this flume, sluice boxes, and collapsed buildings still remain at the site. Development consists of a few test pits on the gravel bench and a caved adit on the river bend in Ravalli quartzitic argillite. Higher terraces may have gold-bearing gravel, although placering was confined to the lower bench. No records of production are available." Dahlem (1959) stated that Chinese laborers placered at the Snipetown placer at the turn of the century. Only a few weathered sluice boxes and a flume remained at the Snipetown when Dahlem studied the area. The site was screened out because it was a placer.
