Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: LINCOLN Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010203 Forest or Resource Area: HELENA Owner: P Impact: L Report: Consolation LC001801 Although this mine is located on patented ground, the Consolation may adversely affect Helena National Forest land downstream. A sulfide-rich waste dump is located adjacent to Shoue Creek and there is a rudimentary vat leach tank partially burned in the floodplain. All adits are completely caved. There is debris scattered over the area; two cabins and one mine building are left standing. A wooden, half-burned vat with junk in it may have been used as a pseudo-vat leach arrangement. Veins here are hosted in Cretaceous gabbro (Shea, 1947) or diorite sill (Pardee and Schrader, 1933) and was last worked in 1969. The vein strikes N50oW, and dips 85o SW (Pardee and Schrader, 1933). A visit in July, 1997 revealed active channel restoration with RichMark as the contractor and ASARCO the permittee. The area where an adit had been had been recontoured and an excavator was in the process of digging a channel north of the road. It was not discerned where the streamside waste had been deposited (possibly uphill, south of the road ?). The rusting junk adjacent to the creek had been removed. |
