Report: Cataract The Cataract is a large mine on private land for which there is no information in the existing literature. At the site, 2 caved shafts and 3 caved adits explore at least three due west trending veins that apparently lie in the eastern continuation of the Sirius shear zone. The veins contain the typical Boulder batholith assemblage of quartz, siderite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite, and the quartz monzonite wallrock is altered to quartz, sericite, and pyrite. A select sample of the vein ran .035 oz/ton Au, 8.86 oz/ton Ag, .150% Cu, .039% Pb, and .070% Zn, so unlike the Sirius on the same vein system, the Cataract was probably operated for its silver value. Two discharges issue from the workings; one flows directly into a tributary of Cataract Creek. A gravity mill apparently operated on the site as there are about 1000 tons of tailings in the Cataract Creek floodplain on mixed national forest and private land. A composite sample of the tailings contained .053 oz/ton Au, 2.37 oz/ton Ag, .084% Cu, .51% Pb, and .150% Zn.
