Report: The Elkhorn Skyline Mine is located near the head of Boulder Creek above Louise Lake on USFS ground. The site consists of several adits, one of which appears to be discharging into the creek. Waste rock dumps are quite extensive; however, impact to soils is not evident. Only a few occurrences of sulfide minerals are present in the dumps. ESK10L: Located on a small seep upstream of the mine workings. The sample will analyzed for Dissolved Metals and Total Recoverable Metals. Stream flow will be measured with a pipe-dam-bucket and stopwatch. ESKS20L: Located immediately downstream of the adit which appears to discharge into a waste rock pile. The sample will analyzed for Dissolved Metals and Total Recoverable Metals. Stream flow will be measured with a pipe-dam-bucket and stopwatch. ESKS30L: Located below the mine site on the main creek. The sample will analyzed for Dissolved Metals and Total Recoverable Metals. Stream flow will be measured with a pipe-dam-bucket and stopwatch. Skyline At the Skyline, folded and faulted Elkhorn Mountain andesite encloses a small mineralized breccia pipe containing andesite clasts cemented by quartz, tourmaline, arsenopyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite (USGS, 1978; Klepper and others, 1957). The andesite surrounding the pipe contains kaolinite, epidote, and pyrite alteration products and some lenses of quartz and sulfides. Maps and cross sections (Klepper and others, 1957) indicate the pipe plunges 64 N70E. A select sample from the stockpile contained .22 oz/ton gold, 4.1 oz/ton silver, .2% copper, 2.8% lead, and 3.0% zinc (USGS, 1978). However, all samples from the pipe and surrounding mineralization were very low grade, and the USGS assigned a low potential for undiscovered resources of metallic minerals to the site. The mineralization was explored by 2 caved adits and 1 open adit, 1 shaft, and some pits and trenches. Workings total 600 feet with 300 feet of vertical extent. One adit has a disharge, and a stream flows around several dumps. The dumps have low metal values (see map).
