Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: JEFFERSON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: DEERLODGE Owner: P Impact: U Report: Big Major (New Bald Eagle, Summit) 08/29/1992 The Big Major is marked by numerous prospect pits and a caved dry shaft with several hundred feet of workings. A near vertical vein strikes N65E and is composed of blue-gray, fine-grained quartz and up to 50% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Areas of the dump contain 100% vein material. The dump contains ~30-40% sulfides. The shaft on the property is dry and caved. Tom Finch said that 20 years ago the shaft timbers were sticking out of the hole. They have disappeared now. The hoist on the site was steam operated; the boiler and the hoist were still on the property. The dump is ~70 ft by 40 ft by 12 ft. There was water north of the mine. A swamp was on the other side of the rise, ~ 200 yards away. Mostly dry. More swamp area to the south, but swamps do not contact the dumps. Uncertain if the shaft is flooded. Access to the Big Major is through the State Mine; both on patented land. Very few prospect pits, all dry. Access is from Boulder to Whitehall gravel road, turn at the Tomahawk (?) ranch, and go to the State Mine. Take the 2-track north. |
