Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: B Impact: Report: Mountain View (GR003569) The Mountain View site is located a short distance east of Garnet ghost town. Workings include 1 partially caved adit, an open and gated adit, and a large dump area. There are also numerous small-scale workings (pits and trenches) in the general area. The ruins of a 25 ton amalgamation mill and two cabins are also found at this site. Host rock is Precambrian Belt quartzite (Garnet Range Formation?); this appears to be a vein deposit with white, coarsely crystalline quartz forming the gangue. The only apparent sign of mineralization is masses of limonite embedded in the quartz. A literature search indicated that this was a gold prospect (Trauerman and Waldron, 1940). An AIM sample assayed 38 ppm lead, 26 ppm zinc, 143 ppm copper, 3.4 ppm silver, 0.225 ounces of gold, and less than 2 ppm arsenic. Information on mine history and production is incomplete; the company purportedly shut down operations in 1939 (Trauerman and Waldron, 1940). A small volume, freshwater flow exits the open adit and flows next to the dump area. In addition, a spring-fed rivelet flows immediately east of the mill building ruins and is in partial contact with dump rock. The area around both of these water flows is heavily vegetated. A plan map of this BLM site was prepared for the AIM program and can be found in the files. |
