Report: The Argo Mine was visited in the summer of 1992 by an MBMG geologist as a part of the Deerlodge National Forest inventory. The site is in the Lolo National Forest boundary but is administered by the Deerlodge National Forest. Most workings are private. There were several cabin ruins in the area. Very extensive workings were found in pink-purple quartzite with quartz-siderite-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins and small quartz-pyrite breccia. Interpretation of the geology of the area was limited because of the very poor exposures of the rocks. Many pits and trenches extend over the area. The mill with vats had burned but several tons of tailings were uphill from it. A 10+ gallon discharge came from the open but flooded adit. Pioneer Technical Services (for DSL-AMRB) in 1994 sampled the adit and found the MCL for antimony and the chronic aquatic life criteria for lead were exceeded in the adit discharge. MBMG did not sample the discharge because it was on private land. One assay sample (JGAR-1) ran 2.76 oz/ton gold, 0.44 oz/ton silver, 0.018% copper, 0.021& lead, and 0.032% zinc.
