Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10040101 Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: L Report: (GR003484) Armada The Armada consists of a moderately sized open pit or open cut with waste rock piles. Estimated total surface disturbance is 3 acres. Host rock is granodiorite in contact with Precambrian or Cambrian sedimentary rocks. The contact is highly mineralized with a large pyrite vein exposed and visible from some distance. This is a replacement deposit, a vein deposit, or a combination of the two. Minerals found at this location include abundant limonite and pyrite with lesser quartz. An AIM sample assayed less than 2 ppm lead, 72 ppm zinc, 10,000+ ppm copper, 25.4 ppm silver, 0.0250 ounces of gold, and 24 ppm arsenic. The Armada property was developing and producing as of 1974 (Lawson, 1974). Judging from the condition of the workings, there has been no mining for several years. These workings are situated on a patented claim surrounded by BLM land. A small spring-fed rivelet flows through this site; in addition several small springs are found onsite. The water, which shows signs of mineralization, flows through the open cut to a small impoundment pond. It probably resurfaces in the gulch immediately east of the site (a tributary drainage of Cayuse Gulch Creek). Although the water shows signs of mineralization (iron-staining in particular), there is abundant aquatic insect life in the pond. |
