Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010201 Forest or Resource Area: MISSOULA Owner: P Impact: U Report: Bear Creek (GR003169) The Bear Creek placer workings consist of cuts, dumps, and minor workings in Bear Creek and Deep Creek drainages. Workings run from Top O' Deep and Garnet all the way to Bearmouth. Quaternary gravels (with cobbles) form the host rock. These gravels are principally composed of granodiorite, quartz monzonite, and limestone. Most of the gold taken from Bear Creek was in particles smaller than wheat grains; shape ranged from flakes to shot (Pardee, 1918). Nuggets were fairly numerous and variable in weight; some were intergrown with quartz (Pardee, 1918). The source for the placer gold was the lode deposits at Garnet, Top O' Deep, and other areas at the heads of drainages. The placer deposits of this area have been worked since the 1860's with most production prior to 1900 (Pardee, 1918). Pardee estimated production to 1916 at $7,000,000.00. Placer operations in the intervening years from 1916 to the present may have added another 3,000,000.00 (Kauffman, 1963). Most of the workings lie on patented claims. The water in Bear Creek and Deep Creek drainages does not appear to have been adversely affected by placer mining operations. |
