Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: U Report: Dewey (GR003069) The Dewey workings, located a short distance west of the ghost town, consist of 2 caved shafts, prospect pits, and multiple dumps. Surface disturbance covers several acres and is continuous with that on adjoining claims. Host rock is granodiorite; gangue mineralogy appears to be a white, vuggy quartz. Ore minerals reported in the oxidized zone included limonite, scant copper minerals, and trace manganese (Pardee, 1918). In the sulfide zone, ore minerals included pyrite, chalcopyrite, and tetrahedrite (Pardee, 1918). The only apparent sign of mineralization on the dumps in 1994 was limonite staining. Ore extracted from this claim averaged 3.5 ounces gold, 6.5 ounces silver, and 2% copper per ton (Pardee, 1918). The Dewey was discovered and developed relatively early in the history of this mining district. In the period 1915-1916, this mine produced $100,000.00 gross (Pardee, 1918). The Dewey workings lie on a patented claim; there appears to be no water component at this location. Maps showing longitudinal sections and underground workings can be found in USGS Bulletin 660-F (Pardee, 1918). |
