Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: U Report: Grant and Hartford (GR003064) The Grant and Hartford patented claim lies immediately south of Garnet ghost town on First Chance Gulch. Workings consist of caved adits and dumps on both sides of the access road (and First Chance Gulch creek). An ore chute in marginal shape is found on this claim immediately east of the access road. Total surface disturbance is approximately 4 acres. Host rock is Precambrian Belt quartzite and schist; this is a vein deposit. Gangue mineralogy, based on dump rock, is vuggy quartz. Other minerals reported include barite, ankerite, calcite, and pyrite (Pardee, 1918). Oxidized ore from stopes on the main adit level reportedly contained 1.5 to 5 ounces of gold and an equal amount of silver per ton; sulfide ore supposedly had similar values (Pardee, 1918). This prospect was disocvered in 1867; most mining was done prior to 1910 (Pardee, 1918). Pardee estimated the production at $30,000.00 (Pardee, 1918). It is possible that some mining has taken place since that time. The large dump on the west side of the access road is in contact with First Chance Gulch Creek; this has the potential for degrading water quality. A claim map, which also shows underground workings, can be found in USGS Bulletin 660-F (Pardee, 1918). |
