Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: GARNET Owner: P Impact: U Report: Red Cloud (GR003044) The Red Cloud workings are located a short distance east-southeast of the Mussingbrod mill. Workings consist of caved adits, dumps, prospect trenches, and cuts. Host rock is Precambrian Belt quartzite and schist. Coarsely crystalline, white quartz forms the gangue at this vein deposit. Signs of mineralization at this site include heavy iron-oxide staining on dump and wall rocks. Ore minerals reported from the sulfide zone include pyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and galena; iron oxides with free gold were reported from the oxidized zone. After being worked by plates and concentrators, the ore averaged 90% silica, 4% iron (pyrite and limonite), 3% sulfur, small amounts of copper and lead, 1 ounce of gold, and 1.5 ounces of silver (Pardee, 1918). This site was discovered about 1867. It reportedly operated until at least 1935 (Gilbert, 1935). There may have been some minor mining activity since that time. All workings observed on this patented claim in 1994 were dry and posed no apparent environmental problems. A map of this mine can be found in USGS Bulletin 660-F (Pardee, 1918). |
