Report: West Virginia Mine FH006825 The West Virginia Mine is located in section 19, T30N, R24W (Ashley Mountain quadrangle) and was visited by MBMG in August 2000. The workings consisted of an open adit and a small, recently-excavated test pit. The adit was open for approximately 30 feet and trended S 20 E. There was no evidence of discharge. Mineralization in the waste rock included quartz veins with pyrite and possibly goethite. A portion of the dump appeared to have been removed, possibly for use as fill on a nearby road. Johns (1961) described the workings as an inaccessible 30-foot shaft, a 60-foot adit crosscut to the vein, and 150 to160 feet of drifting along a displaced vein segment. Bornite was reported as the primary copper mineral and production amounted to about 60 tons of ore. MBMG was unable to locate the shaft described in the literature. Based on the location of national forest boundary markers and recent survey stakes, it appears that the portal of the adit and the test pit are located on private property and most of the underground workings are on the national forest.
