Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: GLACIER VIEW Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 17010206 Forest or Resource Area: FLATHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: North Fork Mine FH004238 The North Fork Mine is located along the North Fork of the Flathead River in section 33, T34N, R20W (Demers Ridge quadrangle). The mine was active in the 1930's and was entered through one adit driven 325 feet S 40 W from the portal in the river bank.(Erdmann, 1947). Total production in 1934 was about 600 tons and the coal was used for local markets in Kalispell and Columbia Falls. The coal seams are within the basal portion of the Tertiary-age Kishenehn Formation. MBMG visited the mine in August 2000. The workings consisted of a possible collapsed shaft covered by boards, a 50'x50'x15' deep pit, remains of an old tram, scattered waste piles consisting of sandy material with small chunks of coal, a concrete ore bin , and the ruins of several cabins. There was no evidence of the adit which may have been destroyed due to slumping along the river bank. No water or other environmental hazards were observed at the site. |
