Report: Sunshine Prospect or Mine The Sunshine was one of the largest mines in the Silver Lake District and it is described in some detail by Walker (1960). Like most mines of the Silver Lake District, it originally operated as a silver mine, and 40 tons of ore were shipped in 1910. The mine was investigated for its tungsten content in the 1950's. The mine lies in Jefferson Formation between two small granodiorite stocks related to the Philipsburg Batholith, and small diorite dikes crop out at the mine. A reverse fault with 60-100 feet of stratigraphic displacement and a N50-70E 70SE attitude contains quartz, calcite, scheelite, and tetrahedrite, with minor fine-grained pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a siliceous breccia. This zone in 2.5-5 feet wide, and contains an average of .5% WO3 (Walker, 1960). Similar en enchelon veins are present over a 4,000 foot strike length. The Storm Lake, or Tarlach, tungsten deposit lies on the same structure northeast of the Sunshine. Diorite dikes have also intruded the fault zone. A select sample of brecciated ore contained .024 oz/ton gold, 9.12 oz/ton silver, .18% copper, .036% lead, and .045% zinc. Workings consist of a locked shaft 210 feet deep with 3 levels. An underground map (Walker, 1960) shows about 750 feet of workings present. There are also shallow open cuts.
