Report: Three large open pits make-up the working of the Highland group located at a Latitude of 45° 02' 02" and a Longitude of 109° 42' 34". James (1946) reported an inclined shaft driven in the main ore body from the bottom of one of these pits, but today is collapsed. The chromite deposits as described by James (1946) are in steeply dipping serpentine 1000 feet long and as wide as 250 feet surrounded by a country rock of granite, granite gneiss, and amphibolitic gneiss. No structures, groundwater discharge, or hazardous waste material was observed at the site. The highwalls from the open pits are over 60 feet high and may be a safety concern.
