Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: DILLON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: U Report: This mine is the shaft symbol located in section 19 on the Torrey Mountain 7.5 min. quadrangle. It is difficult to locate, partially because the road shown on the topo either does not exist or is overgrown. It is best located by taking a bearing by compass and cutting down the slope (quartzite talus) and through the woods. A log cabin is built over a steeply inclined shaft with ladder which is open at least 50'. It was driven in dolomite / limestone ?, possibly Hasmark. Winters and others (1994) associates this mine with the Buster which was mined in the early-1970's; this report lists production in 1972 as 10 tons. A sample by the U.S. Bureau of Mines assayed 0.25 opt Au, 0.11 opt Ag, 4.4% Pb and 2.6% Zn. The rocks strike N. 20 degrees W. and dip 40 degrees SW. Two shallow trenches were dug to the north of the shaft. No environmental/water problems. Open, inclined shaft but very remote site. There is the building over the shaft (roof collapsed) and one cabin with the roof collapsed. |
