Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: M Impact: U Report: Old Faithful Mine BE008017 Favorite BE000629 The Old Faithful was probably the largest producer in the district. Production totaled 1037 tons of ore yielding 69,512 pounds Pb, 6,700 pounds Zn, 2582 pounds Cu, 1576 ounces Ag, and 268 ounces Au. Tailings were dumped in the dry drainage; a flake of free gold was found in a piece of siliceous breccia on the tailings pile. The vein here is composed of red-brown jasper, goethite, limonite, manganese oxide, with blebs of pyrite and galena (Geach, 1972). Workings explored the north-south vein for 1200 feet; the vein averages three to five feet wide. Host rock reported includes Mississippian Madison limestone or Quadrant sandstone (Winchell, 1914) or Cambrian Hasmark Formation (Loen and Pearson, 1989). Workings include a 250 foot deep shaft (presently caved) with 300 feet of workings driven off it. Assays from a composite sample taken across the face of the dry tailings (PGOF-1) ran 0.071 opt Au, 0.09 opt Ag, 0.62% Cu, 0.02% Pb and 0.03% Zn. Note : Mines noted by Sassman, 1941 but not in MILS database; North Star lode, Emerald mine, Grundy, Dement, Belle, Rothchild (associated with the Faithful), Alice and New York properties (associated with the Faithful, Cable, and Capitol), and the Bull mine. |
