Report: Yellow Band Group (BE000396/BE004530/BE000827/BE003975/BE003990) The Yellow Band or Shafer Group includes the Yellowband, Discovery, Cross, Park, and Pine Tree Claims. The ore deposits have been mined by adits and small open cuts (Geach, 1972). Dumps of varying size are found adjacent to the adits and cuts. Surface disturbance covers a fairly large area. Primary host rock is the Devonian Jefferson Formation (dark, limy dolomite with calcite veinlets); the Devonian Three Forks Shale also hosts some mineral deposits. Workings explore quartz veins or lenses localized along or below thrust faults (Geach, 1972); the Jefferson dolomite is brecciated along these veins. Primary minerals include native gold and sparse tetrahedrite; cinnibar, stibnite, and mercury were also found (Geach, 1972). Limonite and hematite staining is present on much of the dump rock as well as on exposed wall rock. These deposits were discovered in 1934. The claims were developed by Anaconda Copper in 1935 and 1936. There was some work from 1936 to 1946; significant mining resumed in 1946 (Geach, 1972). Recorded production from this group is 28,715 tons of ore yielding 2583 pounds lead, 8521 pounds zinc, 10,470 pounds copper, 77,515 ounces silver, and 16,258 ounces gold (Geach, 1972). Some workings on these claims show signs of recent mining activity. Workings of the Yellow Band Group are located on a dry N-S trending ridge above French Creek; there is no water component. All workings are located on USFS land. A claim map of this area can be found in the MBMG files.
