Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: DILLON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: May Day (BE003920) The May Day is an active mine consisting of multiple shafts, trenches, and pits; nine small dumps and one large dump are present (Geach, 1972). In 1994, all but a single shaft on the north end of the prospect were caved. Total surface disturbance is approximately 2 1/2 acres. The workings follow a mineralized shear zone in Precambrian Belt Quartzite and shale. The mineralized shear zone trends N12E and dips 38SE (Geach, 1972). The shear zone is characterized by gray to yellowish gouge containing lenses of quartz, pyrite, and lead (Geach, 1972). Fresh material from present activity is dark gray in color, muddy, and contains abundant pyrite. This site was discovered in 1934; production records exist from 1935 to present day. Total recorded production to 1961 was 754 tons of ore yielding 51,684 pounds lead, 1256 pounds zinc, 572 pounds copper, 4380 ounces silver, and 539 ounces gold. This is a dry site located on USFS land. Geach includes a plan view of the May Day workings in his 1972 publication. |
