Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: DILLON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: Virginia Claim (BE000870) The Virginia Claim consists of several surface pits/trenches and several small dumps. Surface disturbance is approximately 1 acre. Host rock appears to be Precambrian Belt Shale metamorphosed into phyllite. The phyllite is reddish-brown or brown on fresh exposure and oxidizes to moderate to light-brown and gray. Minor quartz lenses, more resistant than the phyllite, were also noted and probably represent the gangue mineralogy. Ore production from this mine is variously listed as gold or tungsten. No production figures or operational data are available for this mine; it seems likely that it was non-commercial. This area is extremely dry; there is no water component. All workings are on USFS land. |
