Report: Star and Star Extension BE000767 This mine is mentioned in Geach (1972) as in the Pioneer Mountains area; not an organized district although he includes the production in the Vipond district. Access is via FS road 925. The two different lists of production figures in Geach do not match. Years of operation (according to Geach) spanned from 1932-1959 yielding 664 ton of ore; producing 552 ounces Au, 780 ounces Ag, 579 pounds Cu, 200 pounds Pb, and 400 pounds Zn. This mine is also noted in USBM report MLA-18-94 and Loen and Pearson, 1989. A field visit revealed many small prospects/shallow shafts, one larger shaft (totally caved), and one, partially open, inclined shaft. The workings are commonly 25 to 50 feet apart and probably not greater than 25 feet in original length. The shallow shafts/prospects are covered by garden fencing, fiberglass panels and metal shingles. There is some rusting junk remaining and ore has been stockpiled in wash tubs and small drums. The geology of the area is interesting in that many xenoliths of gneiss (Missoula Group ?) are suspended in an intrusive and are exposed in the walls of the cuts. Ruppel and others (1993) show this area as Precambrian Missoula Group, but it must be very close to the Late Cretaceous granodiorite contact.
