Report: Excelsior Mine BE000743 One vertical shaft (capped) and one adit at the main mine, with several short adits associated with the property, comprised of three patented claims (Excelcior Extension, Excelcior Placer, and Excelsior Mill Site). Cretaceous granodiorite and a quartz porphyry dike intruded Mississippian Madison limestone as shown on a mine map (Geach, 1972). A 2' wide vein mined trends S37oE and minerals associated with the Excelsior include garnet, calcite, specularite, chlorite, tetradymite, native gold, quartz, siderite, manganese oxide, and auriferous pyrite. Production from the Excelsior spanned from 1872 when it was patented and was last worked in 1963 (no ore); the mine was most active between the years of 1902, 1911-14, and 1917-19. Historical production records show that ore averaged of 0.788 opt Au, 2.16 opt Ag, 2.09% Cu; a select chip sample assayed 0.001 opt Au, 0.05 Ag, 0.03% Cu, and no lead or zinc (Geach, 1972). Other references include Shenon, 1931, Lowell, 1965, Sassman, 1941. The area has been secured by DSL, AMRB with expanded metal grate over the shaft and a cable mesh on the adit. Other openings have been backfilled and recontoured. One wooden headframe remains at the site.
