Report: Kelley Gulch (BE000730) The Kelley Gulch workings consist of two bulldozer trenches located on the top of a dry ridge. Total surface disturbance is approximately 1 acre. Kelley Gulch is a phosphate deposit developed in the Retort Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Swanson, 1970). Phosphate is present as apatite and fluorapatite. Beds strike N25E and dip 25NW (Cressman and Swanson, 1964). A dike of probable dacitic composition has intruded the Retort Member at this location; no contact effects were noted in the country rock (Cressman and Swanson, 1964). The rocks in this immediate area are complexly folded and faulted; much of the phosphate present may have been spoiled by shearing. No production data or operational history was found in the literature. This dry site on USFS land poses no environmental problems.
