Report: Cable Mine BE000653 The Cable mine is a patented claim located to the north of an unnamed creek ("Old Faithful Creek") draining into the East Fork Dyce Creek which in turn flows into Grasshopper Creek. The main adit on the property has been secured by DSL-AMRB with a culvert and locked grate. There are three other collapsed adits but there are no other physical hazards on the property. A collapsed building to the north of the road was probably the old mill (gravity ?). The Cable is located on the Polaris 7½-minute quadrangle in the SW¼ section 24, T.6S., R.12W. The property is reached via Highway 278 off Interstate 15 south of Dillon. Travel 12.7 miles west then take the right just west of the top of Badger Pass and go approximately 5 miles, over Taylor Creek, over cattleguard then take right on BLM road 1878. Go 2.8 to 3.0 miles north along Dyce Creek, take right (east) fork on BLM road 1879 travel 1.1 miles , take right before crossing main Dyce Creek then go < ¼-mile. There is a small red tar paper shack on the right. Tailings are in creek to the southwest (downstream) of the shack. Tailings are on private land but BLM ownership starts approximately 750 feet downstream. It appears that the tails were placed in the creek as a dam to make water available for placering. There is a good possibility that they may have been brought down from the Old Favorite and Faithful claims. There is no record of production for this mine (Geach, 1972). Geach, 1972 has a geologic plan map of the 170 foot long adit which explored an irregular fissure vein striking N25oW, dipping 30o to 54o NE in buff calcareous sandstone (Cambrian Hasmark?). Minerals found on the dumps include red-brown oxides with some copper stain, and some chalcedony/jasperoid. Sassman, 1941 makes a brief mention of this mine in his study of mining in Beaverhead County. A chip sample of the copper-stained portion of the vein (Geach, 1972) assayed 0.006 opt Au, 0.35 opt Ag, 4.93% Cu, with no Pb or Zn. Assays from the tailings (PGCB-1) ran 0.083 opt Au, 0.17% Ag, 0.34% Cu, 0.01% Pb, 0.02 Zn, with other assays of 2 ppm Hg and 36 ppm Bi. The remainder the 33 element suite of assays are on file in room 11, Main Hall.
