Report: Tuscarora Group (BE000635) The Tuscarora group of patented claims include the Governor Tilden, Florida, Wooley, Fraction, Fraction Placer, Reform, Burleigh, and Spring (Geach, 1972). Multiple dumps are found in the area. Surface disturbance covers several acres. Host rock for the deposits of the Tuscarora Group is Devonian Jefferson Dolomite; the beds here strike N20E and dip approximately 25SE (Geach, 1972). Much of the ore mineralization occurred in pipes localized at the intersections of fractures parallel to the Tuscarora fault (Geach, 1972). Ore consisted primarily of a "sand carbonate" which assayed as much as 60% lead and 60 ounces of silver. Patchy galena was also found locally; it was associated with reddish-brown jasper remnants on the walls of some pipes (Geach, 1972). Evidence of minralization on the dump rock includes limonite and hematite with quartz; some areas, such as the Florida Claim, appear to have extensive iron mineralization. An AIM sample from this claim assayed 672 ppm lead, 1030 ppm zinc, greater than 15% iron, 253 ppm copper, 21.8 ppm silver, trace gold, and 2330 ppm arsenic. The earliest discoveries in this area took place in 1865. Production was recorded intermittently up to 1959 (Geach, 1972). Records from 1916 to 1959 indicate cumulative production of 1994 tons yielding 433,468 pounds lead, 10,323 pounds zinc, 10,681 pounds copper, 17,890 ounces silver and 393 ounces gold (Geach, 1972). Some of the Tuscarora Group workings are located in the drainage below Argenta Spring; most of these workings are revegetated. The drainage below these sites is dry. Workings of the Tuscarora Group are located on patented claims adjacent to BLM land. Geach includes plan view and cross-section maps of the Tuscarora and Governor Tilden Mines and a plan view of the Wooley Mine in his 1972 publication.
