Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: P Impact: V Report: Golden Leaf Mine BE000563 This is a very large, complex of mines and three successive mills, largely reclaimed by DSL-AMRB. Grasshopper Creek has been rip-rapped along the entire length of tailings except for the short length along the Priscilla Mill. The 1100' x 300' reddish tails have not been capped, although well revegetated by sagebrush and wildflowers, so some wind erosion occurs. Northern Testing (1982) determined that there was 19,200 cubic yards of tailings. All the adits have been secured, and most of the dumps recontoured. There was at least three adit levels, totaling between 10,000' (Geach, 1972) and 18,000' (Heinrich, 1949) of workings for the entire group. Mill-types includes a 250-ton mill, a 100-ton cyanidation mill, and a 125-ton continuous decantation cyanide plant with a zinc-dust precipitation unit (Geach, 1972). The deposits occur along the western margin of the Bannack stock (Kgd) and its apophyses in Mississippian Madison limestone. The ore occurs outside garnetized zones adjacent to the stock (Geach, 1972). Minerals listed for this site include: tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, quartz, calcite, garnet, iron oxides, cerusite, anglesite, galena, smithsonite, and pyrite (Geach, 1972) and additionally, according to Shenon, 1931, native gold, malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, tenorite, sphalerite, native sulfur, specularite, magnetite, limonite, epidote, siderite, vesuvianite and manganese oxide. Dates of operation include: 1909-14, 1925-26, 1937 and 1955 (Geach, 1972). In this period, the Wadams and Golden Leaf produced 2,921 tons ore, yielding 10,472 oz Au, 29,455 oz Ag, 7,001 lbs Cu, 100,781 lbs Pb and 300 lbs Zn. |
