Report: Capitol (BE000486) The Capitol Mine site is located at the head of Cave Gulch (a spring-fed drainage). The workings consist of a large open cut, 3 adits, and 2 shafts (Geach, 1972); total surface disturbance is approximately 5 acres. All of the underground workings are now caved. The workings explored a network of N-S trending, closely-spaced, mineralized fractures which cut Precambrian quartzite. The mineralized fracture filling included quartz, galena, and cerrusite (Geach, 1972). A selected grab sample assayed 5.40 percent lead, 0.8 percent zinc, 0.70 percent copper, 3.20 ounces silver, and 0.14 ounces of gold. The mine was in operation 1940-1941, 1948-1949, and 1952-1953 (Geach, 1972). Cumulative production for the years listed above was 36 tons yielding 7986 pounds lead, 634 pounds zinc, 311 pounds copper, 267 ounces silver, and 1 ounce gold (Geach, 1972). Judging from the lack of vegetation and area worked, the mine has operated since 1953. A moderately sized dump below a caved adit is in contact with one of the springs in Cave Gulch. Although some portions of this dump are heavily mineralized, vegetation has colonized dump rock near the spring. This site is on USFS land. Geach included a sketch (plan) map of this mine in his 1972 publication. A plan map covering the lower portions of this site was also made for the AIM program.
