Agency: BLM Region District: Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: Owner: Impact: Report: Iron Mountain Area (BE000749/BE000869/BE000438/BE000204/BE000306/BE000251/BE000312) The Anaconda, Brownell, Copper Bell, Goldsmith, Hand (Maudline), Iron Mountain, and Jack Rabbit mines are located on or near Iron Mountain, near Argenta. These workings consist of numerous trenches, pits, shafts, adits, and dumps. Total surface disturbance is in excess of 100 acres. The mines are located at or near the contact of the Madison Limestone with the Argenta quartz monzonite stock. The deposits are in a strongly mineralized area measuring approximately 1200' east-west and more than 1200' in length north from the contact (Geach, 1972). The ore bodies are irregular fissure veins cutting the limestone country rock or replacement deposits at or near the quartz monzonite contact (Geach, 1972). The principle ore minerals include massive brown cerrusite, limonite, and patches of dark-gray anglesite (Geach, 1972). Dump and wall rock throughout this area is heavily iron-stained. Production from this group of mines has been substantial and includes lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold. The Iron Mountain Mine sites are dry; no mention of ground water in mine shafts was made in the literature. These mines are situated on patented ground adjacent to BLM land. Geach includes an underground map of the Goldsmith Mine and two longitudinal section maps of the Hand Mine in his 1972 publication. |
